Students of Gymnázium sv. Uršule, secondary school in Bratislava, Visited the Slovak Institute of Metrology on the Occasion of Continued Promotion of Metrology and the 150th Anniversary of the Metre Convention
The Slovak Institute of Metrology (SMÚ) was visited by 24 first-year students from Gymnázium sv. Uršule, a secondary grammar school in Bratislava, who took part in an excursion focused on practical physics. The objective of the visit was to familiarise the students with fundamental physical quantities and their corresponding units, and to demonstrate how these quantities are realised in practice.
During the excursion, the students had the opportunity to explore selected SMÚ laboratories, including those of the Mass, Pressure and Geometric Quantities Department, the Chemistry Department, the Electricity and Time Department, and the Thermometry, Photometry and Radiometry Department. Throughout the demonstrations, SMÚ specialists provided expert explanations that helped the students understand the principles of accurate measurement, the significance of metrological traceability, and the role of national standards in the realisation and maintenance of physical units.
The excursion offered the students a valuable opportunity to connect their theoretical knowledge of physics with real-world applications and to appreciate the importance of measurement accuracy in everyday life, as well as across various sectors of the national economy.
On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Metre Convention, SMÚ continues to actively promote metrology among young people and to foster their interest in technical and natural-science disciplines.
