SMÚ Representation in International Metrological Organizations

BIPM

The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) is a globally recognized organization established by the Metric Convention of 1875. Through BIPM, member states collaborate on metrological and measurement standards.

As part of its activities within BIPM, SMÚ is a member of the following consultative committees:

  • Quantity of substance – Metrology in Chemistry (CCQM),
  • Mass (CCM),
  • Length (CCL),
  • Thermometry (CCT),
  • Photometry and Radiometry (CCPR).

Additionally, SMÚ has served as an observer in other committees, including:

  • Ionizing Radiation (CCRI),
  • Acoustics, Ultrasound, and Vibration (CCAUV).

The current list of SMÚ calibration and measurement capabilities (CMC) is available in the internationally recognized KCDB database:
KCDB Database

This database forms part of the international CIPM Mutual Recognition Agreement (CIPM MRA), where national metrology institutes demonstrate the equivalence of their standards, ensuring mutual recognition of calibration and measurement certificates.

EURAMET

EURAMET is the Regional Metrology Organization (RMO) for Europe. It coordinates cooperation among national metrology institutes (NMIs) and designated institutes (DIs) in Europe in areas such as metrology research, traceability to SI units, and international recognition of national standards and related CMCs.

Within EURAMET, SMÚ participates in the following technical committees:

  • Electricity and Magnetism (TC-EM),
  • Flow (TC-F),
  • Ionizing Radiation (TC-IR),
  • Length (TC-L),
  • Mass and Related Quantities (TC-M),
  • Metrology in Chemistry (TC-MC),
  • Photometry and Radiometry (TC-PR),
  • Quality (TC-Q),
  • Thermometry (TC-T),
  • Time and Frequency (TC-TF).

EURAMET and its members prioritize increasing the societal impact of metrology. Key tools to achieve these goals include research programs such as:

  • European Metrology Research Program (EMRP),
  • European Metrology Program for Innovation and Research (EMPIR), and
  • European Partnership on Metrology (EPM).

The EPM program, co-funded by member states and the European Union, aims to advance metrology in Europe to address global challenges and remain competitive.

COOMET

COOMET is a Regional Metrology Organization for Europe and Asia. It coordinates research, traceability to SI units, and international recognition of national standards and CMCs.

As a member, SMÚ is represented in the following COOMET technical committees:

  • General Metrology (TC 1.1),
  • Electricity and Magnetism (TC 1.3),
  • Flow Measurement (TC 1.4),
  • Length and Angle (TC 1.5),
  • Mass and Related Quantities (TC 1.6),
  • Photometry and Radiometry (TC 1.7),
  • Physical Chemistry (TC 1.8),
  • Ionizing Radiation and Radioactivity (TC 1.9),
  • Thermometry and Thermal Physics (TC 1.10),
  • Time and Frequency (TC 1.11),
  • Reference Materials (TC 1.12),
  • Legal Metrology (TC 2),
  • Quality Forum Technical Committee (TC 3.1),
  • Innovative Research in Metrology (TC 5).

WELMEC

WELMEC facilitates cooperation among EU and EFTA member states' legal metrology authorities. SMÚ is represented in working groups on:

  • Software (WG7),
  • Water Meters and Heat Meters (WG13).

OIML

The International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) is a worldwide intergovernmental organization that supports member states in establishing efficient, internationally compatible legal metrology infrastructures. These infrastructures promote mutual trade, ensure trust among member states, and harmonize consumer protection standards.

SMÚ actively represents Slovakia in OIML technical committees as a member of:

  • Instruments for Measuring Length and Related Quantities (TC 7),
  • Measurement of Quantities of Fluids (TC 8),
  • Instruments for Measuring Pressure, Force, and Related Quantities (TC 10),
  • Instruments for Measuring Temperature and Related Quantities (TC 11),
  • Instruments for Measuring Electrical Quantities (TC 12),
  • Instruments for Measuring Pollutants (TC 16).

SMÚ also participates in various subcommittees as a member or observer.
