Students from the Secondary School of Electrical Engineering in Žilina visited the Slovak Institute of Metrology on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Metric Convention
Today, 50 students from the Secondary School of Electrical Engineering in Žilina participated in a guided tour of the Slovak Institute of Metrology (SMÚ). During the visit, the students had the opportunity to explore selected metrological laboratories and facilities of the Institute, accompanied by expert explanations provided by SMÚ specialists. They visited laboratories within the Department of Electricity and Time, including the Direct Current Voltage and Current Laboratory, the Electrical Power Laboratory, the Electrical Power and Energy Laboratory, and the Time and Frequency Laboratory. In addition, the students were introduced to the work of the Department of Thermometry, Radiometry, and Photometry, specifically the Pyrometry Laboratory and the Photometry Laboratory.
The secondary school students also had the opportunity to learn about the operation of selected national standards, including the national standards of electrical resistance, direct current voltage, time and frequency, as well as the national standard of alternating current power and energy at industrial frequency. During the presentations in individual laboratories, they became acquainted with the methods used for the realization of units of the respective physical quantities, as well as with the procedures ensuring the metrological traceability of measuring instruments.
The Slovak Institute of Metrology continues to actively promote metrology to the public on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Metric Convention, thereby contributing to raising awareness of measurement accuracy and its importance for everyday life and industry.
