Throughout this week, Rádio Slovensko – Slovak Television and Radio (STVR) is focusing on the topic of metrology and the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention. Within its regular segment “Story of the Week,” the station is broadcasting a five-part series of short features exploring the history of metrology, the evolution of measurement units, and their crucial role in modern society.

The series was produced in cooperation with the Slovak Institute of Metrology (SMÚ), which serves as the national metrology institution in the Slovak Republic. SMÚ plays a fundamental role in maintaining the accuracy and consistency of measurements nationwide. The series also illustrates how a diverse range of historical measurement units gradually evolved into a unified international system, which today forms an essential foundation for trade, healthcare, research, and technological advancement.

Metrology is far more than a technical field— its relevance extends into everyday life. From weighing food to ensuring the precise operation of medical devices, laboratory instruments, and industrial systems, metrology plays an essential role in guaranteeing accuracy, reliability, and safety across many critical areas of life and the economy.
