On 29 April 2026, the Slovak Institute of Metrology (SMÚ) hosted a study visit by 20 international students from several European universities specializing in nuclear physics and engineering. The visit was organized within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme by the Czech Technical University in Prague. The programme focused on the activities of the Department of Ionizing Radiation. The students were introduced to measurement methods, measurement systems and instrumentation used for ionizing radiation, including the application of primary and secondary calibration procedures in accordance with internationally accepted metrological principles.

The Department maintains and develops the national measurement standards for quantities of ionizing radiation and participates in national and international comparisons and research activities. It also contributes to education and training in the nuclear field.

In accordance with its legal authorisations, SMÚ is licensed to possess and use radioactive sources and is the only organisation in the Slovak Republic authorised to perform direct metrological control of specified measuring instruments for ionizing radiation.
